Tulsa Metro Chamber launches Mosaic, a program to foster diversity and inclusion in business

10.6.2011
The Tulsa Metro Chamber launched a new program to assist businesses with embracing diversity and inclusion as organizational practices. The Chamber incorporated the program, Mosaic, into its strategic plan as a dynamic tool in attracting and retaining business and individuals to the Tulsa region.

The concept of Mosaic, a council of business owners, chamber members and volunteers, was initiated one year ago after Chamber leadership determined a component to effectively competing with other regions is recognizing the importance of recruiting, retaining and embracing a diverse population.

“Every day the Chamber markets the Tulsa region as an ideal location for prospective business expansions. As the 2010 Census shows, the demographics of the Tulsa region continue to evolve, and therefore, as will the demographic make-up of workforce, management and the leaders among our business community,” said Dr. Gerard Clancy, chair of the Tulsa Metro Chamber and president of the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa.

Mosaic will assist area companies with the knowledge necessary to understand and prepare for trends in diversity in the community. Mosaic will also provide businesses with referrals to consultants who can provide a comprehensive survey of their workforce on diversity and inclusion topics.

Shane Fernandez, executive vice-president of Crafton Tull and chair of Mosaic, stressed the importance of diversity and inclusion to the success of a company. He stated “companies that embrace diversity and inclusion foster a work environment where all employees, customers and communities served are treated with respect and dignity.”

Business leaders stressed the importance of recognizing diversity is broad and not limited to differences in race or gender. They also view diversity as a representation of different experiences, perspectives, opinions and culture.

Stacy Schusterman, chairman and CEO of Samson Investment Company, shared her view on the significance of diversity to a company, stating “today’s opportunities and issues are complex, requiring multiple viewpoints and analysis. We believe our commitment to diversity better enables us to meet the challenges and opportunities we have before us by providing multiple viewpoints.”

The mission of Mosaic is to leverage the region’s diversity to create an inclusive community and improve the economic and social climate in the Tulsa region.
